I was trying to execute my long-term HSA strategy, but my bank's app is terrible and I hate manually tracking receipts.

Why I started SnapHSA?

I built SnapHSA because as a Financial Mutant managing medical expenses for a family of four, I hit a wall executing the HSA shoebox strategy. The existing tracking tools on the market are bloated, expensive, and trap you in endless monthly subscriptions. Worse, they demand access to your sensitive financial and health data, which is a massive privacy red flag. I didn't want to pay a premium just to have my family's private medical records mined by a tech company, nor did I want to be locked into a specific bank's ecosystem. I needed a lean, secure tool where I own my data outright, pay only for what I use, and keep my privacy intact. Since that didn't exist, I built it.

Between raising a family of four and managing a career, life is complicated enough—preserving your tax-free investments shouldn't be.

Fairness & Transparency

I built SnapHSA to be the tool I actually wanted to use: strictly pay-as-you-go. There are no predatory monthly subscriptions, no hidden fees, and no holding your data hostage. You pay a few bucks for scan tokens when you need them, and that's it. It keeps the servers running, keeps your data secure, and leaves the rest of your money exactly where it belongs—invested and compounding.

Your data stays yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to submit receipts for HSA accounts to your bank?
No, you do not submit your medical receipts to your HSA custodian or bank when you make a withdrawal or use your HSA debit card. The bank simply processes the transaction. However, the IRS requires you to keep itemized receipts on hand independently to prove that every dollar withdrawn from your HSA was used strictly for qualified medical expenses if your tax return is audited.
How long do I need to keep my HSA receipts?
The IRS generally recommends keeping HSA records and tax receipts for at least 3 years from the date you file the tax return claiming the HSA distribution. However, if you utilize a delayed reimbursement strategy (withdrawing funds years after the expense occurred), you must keep the itemized receipt from the original service date until 3 years after the tax year you finally took the reimbursement. This makes a digital receipt vault essential for long-term tracking.
What specific details must be visible on an IRS-compliant HSA receipt?
A standard credit card slip or bank statement is usually not enough for an IRS audit because it doesn't show what you bought. An IRS-compliant receipt or Explanation of Benefits (EOB) must clearly display:
  • The name of the doctor, pharmacy, or service provider.
  • The date the medical service was provided or the item was bought.
  • An itemized description of the treatments, services, or eligible products.
  • The exact dollar amount you were responsible for paying.
SnapHSA's AI is specifically optimized to extract these four key fields automatically.
Can I claim an old medical expense from years ago if I track it now?
Yes! This is known as the "HSA Shoebox Strategy." There is no time limit on when you must reimburse yourself from an HSA, provided the qualified medical expense occurred after your HSA was originally established. By using SnapHSA to store and organize old medical receipts digitally today, you can leave your tax-advantaged money invested to grow tax-free, and securely claim the reimbursement years or decades down the line.
What is SnapHSA and how does it help me?
SnapHSA is a smart receipt-tracking vault specifically designed for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). The IRS requires you to keep documentation for all HSA withdrawals to prove they were spent on eligible medical expenses. SnapHSA automates this process by digitizing receipts, extracting key details via AI, organizing them, and auditing them for IRS eligibility.
What does "IRS Compliant" status mean?
The IRS defines specific categories of medical, dental, and vision services that qualify for tax-free HSA spending. Our AI scans the text of your receipt to match it against these categories. If the service or items on the receipt are standard medical treatments (like copays, prescriptions, or therapy), it flags it as Compliant. If it contains non-eligible items (like general groceries), it notifies you.
What are tokens and how do I earn them?
AI OCR scanning and review requires processing power. SnapHSA uses a token system for Smart Snapping:
  • Free Tokens: Earn free scanning tokens anytime by visiting the "Buy Tokens" page and watching a quick video ad.
  • Paid Tokens: Purchase token bundles for bulk scanning without any ads.
  • Manual Mode: Crop and type details in yourself without spending any tokens.
How do I download a receipt image?
Open an expense entry within the app and perform a long press on the receipt image. It will instantly save the full-resolution file to your device.
How do I learn more about what each field is for?
Simply click the (information) button located next to any individual field title inside the app for a detailed breakdown of its purpose.
How do I export my receipt log for tax filing?
Go to the Export tab in the menu, select your target date range (e.g., Jan 1 - Dec 31), and click Export to CSV. You'll get a clean spreadsheet containing dates, merchants, amounts, and compliance flags, which you can hand directly to your tax professional or HSA administrator.
Does the app save receipts to my phone's gallery?
Yes! SnapHSA includes a custom option to save a clean, cropped copy of your receipt directly to your device's photo gallery. It names the file systematically (e.g., CVS_Pharmacy_05-22-2026.jpg) so your backups are organized and easy to search.
